Belonging

Through a series of creative projects, we explored what it means to be Sotonian.

Developed with communities across the city, these projects created space to share lived experiences, celebrate hidden stories and reflect Southampton’s diverse identity.

Multi-Stories

Multi-Stories transformed Westquay’s Multi-Storey Car Park into the South Coast’s most expansive permanent street art gallery.

Developed over three consecutive years it blended bold visual art with live events and public participation.

A partnership between Westquay and Southampton Forward, with art curation by Paintshop Studio.

Across three chapters, Multi-Stories has:

  • Commissioned over 90 permanent murals from a wide range of local and national artists
  • Transformed nine levels of the Westquay multi-storey car park into an evolving public gallery
  • Engaged hundreds of participants through artist-led workshops, community takeovers, live music, dance, and interactive events
  • Inspired the next generation, offering a platform for young creatives to learn, connect, and shine

Southampton’s Musical Story

Music has long been woven into Southampton’s identity – shaped by the people, communities and cultures that have moved through and made their home in the city.

Through Southampton’s Jazz Story, SO: Electronic and Tapestry Festival, Southampton Forward explored and celebrated this rich musical and social heritage: bringing them to life through new commissions, performances, events and opportunities to take part – connecting thousands of people with stories and histories that have shaped Southampton, but have often gone unheard or unrecognised.

Together, the projects tell different chapters of a city whose musical identity has been shaped by migration, exchange, creativity and connection.

Jane Austen 250

Southampton’s cultural organisations came together to mark the 250th anniversary of Jane Austen’s birth with a collaborative programme of performances, exhibitions, workshops and creative commissions.

With strong links to both Southampton and Hampshire, Jane Austen provided an opportunity to celebrate the city’s literary heritage while engaging new audiences in fresh, contemporary ways.

Southampton Forward partnered with and supported organisations including Mayflower, ‘a space’ arts,
Artswork, ArtfulScribe, In Focus Education & Development and ZoieLogic Dance Theatre.

Together, these partnerships supported project development, secured funding and new commissions, and delivered a citywide celebration that reached diverse audiences and showcased the strength of Southampton’s cultural sector.

Building Skills, Connections and Leadership

A thriving cultural city depends on the people and organisations behind it. Alongside our public programme, Southampton Forward invested in people, partnerships and new ways of working – creating opportunities to learn, share ideas, build confidence and make new connections.

From supporting emerging community leaders and helping local organisations become stronger and more inclusive, to bringing people together across Southampton, Hampshire and the Solent to share knowledge, these projects were about building skills, relationships and networks that could continue to make a difference long after our programme ends.
