What We Covered in Our Fourth Session

Our March session of SO: Governance delved into the critical topic of risk management within the context of charity and not-for-profit sector governance. We explored how to identify, assess, and mitigate risks to help ensure the success of organisations. Whether attendees were seasoned professionals or new to the world of governance, the event offered valuable insights and practical tips to enhance risk management practices. There was plenty of time for questions and discussion throughout the session.

We were delighted to welcome our guest speakers, who shared their expertise on risk, how to mitigate it, the role of Trustees in managing risk, and real-life examples of navigating high-risk situations and projects.

Rob Francis, Capital Actuary at Quilter and Chair of In Focus Education and Development, shared what an Actuary does to analyse risk, his role as Chair of a charity, and some of the common types of risk along with how to mitigate worst-case scenarios.

Matt Goode, Chief Operations Officer at Mayflower, shared his insights into managing a capital project, how to keep it on track, and what to do when things go wrong.

Recap Session 5 – Evaluating Our Impact Tuesday 29 April 2025

In this fifth session of Southampton Forward’s SO:Governance series, we focused on the theme of impact evaluation—a key area for charities and community organisations striving to understand and improve the difference they make.

Chaired by Rob Kurn, CEO of Southampton Voluntary Services, and featuring guest speaker Lucy Horne, Head of Impact and Insights at the Saints Foundation, the session explored the challenges and opportunities of evaluating impact in the third and voluntary sectors.

Together, we discussed:

  • Why evaluating impact can be complex and nuanced
  • Different frameworks and approaches that can support effective evaluation
  • Real-world examples and lessons learned from across the sector
  • How to create a culture of learning and reflection within your organisation

The session included an open discussion and Q&A, allowing attendees to share their own experiences and learn from one another in a supportive space.
