Celebrating Jane Austen 250 in Southampton

Throughout 2024 and 2025, Southampton Forward worked alongside cultural organisations, artists, educators and communities across the city to mark 250 years since the birth of Jane Austen – one of England’s most celebrated writers, and a woman whose life and work continue to inspire creativity and connection.

The Jane Austen 250 programme in Southampton was rooted in collaboration. Southampton Forward supported new commissions, co-developed funding bids, and delivered its own events to create a citywide celebration that was inclusive, contemporary and uniquely Southampton.

Southampton’s cultural organisations worked collectively to empower communities, inspire young people and celebrate creativity across the city – framing Jane Austen 250 as a celebration of imagination, inclusion and shared heritage.

‘a space’ arts delivered two concurrent Jane Austen exhibitions at God’s House Tower, exploring Austen’s connections to the city.
